AURIELO

“You look like shit,” Giovan says, coming back into the house after pulling the SUV into the garage and unloading the worn duffel.

My brother never skirts around an issue. Ever. He’s always been direct. It’s part of the Rinaldi charm.

“Yeah, well, the Bianchis showed up at Gramp’s old house.” It’s still hard for me to refer to the place as my home. Grandpa left me the house instead of Giovan, and it’s hard not to feel guilty.

I suggested we sell the place and split the proceeds fifty-fifty, but Giovan told me I was stupid to sell the property. It’s been in the family forever. It should stay with the family.

“Etta showed up?”

“No, her father and his crew.” I bite down on my bottom lip, tasting blood. “Six of them.”

Giovan winces. “He’s got surveillance on the old house.”

“Obviously.” I roll my eyes. How else would we have been seen? The Bianchis aren’t quiet people. If they want to be seen, they make it known.

I head into the kitchen, and Giovan follows me. I need to make Ashton and Karina something to eat for dinner. It’s getting late, and the kid will be going to bed soon. At least, I assume he will. I have no idea what time he goes to bed.

“What happened? You look like shit, and the kid was shaking when you came inside.”

“Yeah, that’s the improved version,” I say. Watching his tears broke my heart. The only thing I could do was storm inside the house, survey the damage, and refocus my attention.

I don’t know a damned thing about being a father, let alone comforting a kid.

But he wasn’t looking for me.

He wanted his mom.

“You going to tell me, or do I have to drag your ass outside and beat it out of you?” Giovan asks.

I grumble under my breath as I open the fridge, pulling out staples to make sandwiches for dinner.

“Dorian showed up threatening my family, scaring the kid. He trashed Gramp’s house and made it clear that he can kill Karina and Ashton at any time.”

Giovan grabs three plates from the opposite cabinet and offers me a hand.

“Your family is safe. You know that Alessandro won’t let anything happen to them while they’re here.”

His words hold little comfort.

“Yeah.” I can’t lock them up inside the compound. Even if I want to do that, it’s not a possibility. Ashton has school, and Karina will never give up her job. But at least she has a bodyguard.

Giovan purses his lips. “I say we take the firefight to him.”

“What?” I ask, glancing up from the sandwiches that I’m preparing.

“No one threatens a Rinaldi,” Giovan says. “You need to tell Alessandro what happened. He’ll order an attack on their home.”

I don’t want to start a war.

But I don’t have a choice. Dorian started this feud, demanding that I marry his kin. “First thing tomorrow,” I mutter under my breath.

“Fine, but if you don’t tell him, I will,” Giovan says.

He’s a good brother. Pain in the ass, but he means well.
